The workshop will introduce you to the basic processes used to create cast iron and bronze sculpture – patternmaking, mold making, casting and finishing. The workshop includes instruction in the use of wax, plasticene (oil-based clay), and plaster. Most participants make their patterns from several pre-made forms we have in stock. These include vessels, light switch covers, bookends, etc. Students can add embellishments of their own design to the forms, making them unique. This is a great way to learn the basics of patternmaking. Alternatively, you can make an original wax pattern or sculpture using the wax-working techniques demonstrated during the workshop.
Remember to wear work clothing: long sleeves and pants, leather boots or shoes. No open toe shoes. Please do not wear any synthetic materials …they will melt. Wear cotton. Sloss Metal Arts will provide safety glasses, gloves, and earplugs.
Open Studios are for artists and others who have experience casting iron. Participants must attend all three days. Bronze will be cast on Saturday only. Participants are limited to a total sand weight of 1000lbs. Participants should arrive with a ready made wax pattern. Patterns may also be made of other materials–plasticene, wood etc.–but must be approved by a staff artist prior to the workshop. During this workshop instructors will be present for assistance but is primarily self-directed. Prior to attending an Open Studio workshop, students must take a beginner/ intermediate workshop with us or be able to demonstrate experience with the medium.
