Sloss Furnaces Foundation is excited to host two, 6-week, Visiting Artist Residencies!
This program is designed for emerging and mid-career artists interested in developing their studio practice and honing technical skills. Visiting Artists will be provided with a furnished apartment near Sloss Furnaces, all casting materials, and access to our sculpture facilities in Sloss' historic casting shed.
Our Summer Visiting Artist Residency will take place May 9th-June 23rd, 2023.

Summer Youth Apprenticeship
Applications for summer 2023 are currently closed. Please check back in the Spring of 2024!
Accepted apprentices will work 30 hours per week with Sloss Metal Art's Resident Artists. Over the course of 8-weeks, they will learn basic metal casting, mold making, fabrication, welding, blacksmithing, and art exhibition preparation.
This program is intended for those currently enrolled in a high school program and local to or have accomodations in Birmingham.
All applicants must attend a mandatory casting workshop.

Resident Artists

Sloss Metal Arts offers 1-year and 3-year, full-time, positions in Birmingham, AL, working in the historic iron foundry.
Resident Artists are the lifeblood of the Sloss Metal Arts program. They perform all foundry related tasks as well as fabrication, maintenance, & education. They work closely with the Foundry Manager to meet Sloss Metal Arts' mission through compelling artistic programming, visionary strategic planning, and sound operational management. Ideal candidates will be experienced in a variety of foundry processes, actively creating and exhibiting artwork, and have completed a related
academic degree. Resident Artists are expected to work approximately 30 hrs/week for Sloss Metal Arts and 10 hrs/week on their personal practice.
Resident Artists are provided with a livable salary, insurance, materials stipend, and studio space in our historic foundry.
