Resident Artists

Applications for the 3-year residency are currently closed.

 

The next application cycle will open in December 2026/January 2027 for a position beginning in May/June 2027. Residency positions are staggered, with one position available each year.

 

​Sloss Metal Arts offers 3-year, full-time work-residencies in Birmingham, AL, working in Sloss' historic iron foundry.

​

Resident Artists are the lifeblood of the Sloss Metal Arts program. This is a full-time work-residency position, with time divided between Sloss commission and outreach projects and your personal artistic practice. Resident Artists perform all foundry-related tasks as well as fabrication, maintenance, & education. They work closely with the Foundry Manager and Metal Arts Director to meet Sloss Metal Arts' mission through compelling artistic programming and visionary strategic planning.

 

Ideal candidates will be experienced in a variety of foundry processes, actively creating and exhibiting artwork, and have completed a related academic degree.

 

Resident Artists are Sloss employees and are expected to work approximately 30 hrs/week for Sloss Metal Arts and 10 hrs/week on their personal practice. Time worked for Sloss can include creating commission work, teaching workshops, foundry maintenance, historic restoration and more.

Resident Artists are provided with a salary, insurance, materials stipend, and work space in our historic foundry. 

​

The expected start date is flexible depending on the applicant's availability, but should be between May-June. This position is for 3 years.

​

Currently, this opportunity is only available to candidates authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available. 

​

Applications are submitted via an online form. The application form requires your name, email, 2 references, and a single PDF including your letter of interest, artist statement, resume/CV, and no more than 10 work examples (group work must be notated as such, specifying what you contributed).
